As we can see from this month's special edition of the Scientific American, modern science since 1845 has provided detailed investigations into the universe of time and space, giving us the theories of evolution and relativity and studying nuclear and quantum physics, genetics and the human genome and inventing modern means of communication and transportation and many useful gadgets to improve our standard of living, but also providing new and faster means of destroying it.
However, since it is now generally believed that the death of the body brings about the extinction of the individual mind and personality of us, once and for all, we are left with an apparently meaningless and pointless existence, beyond propagating our species and providing for future generations. This gives an immense responsibility to the medical profession to extend and prolong life at all costs, experimenting cruelly on animals and humans in the process.
Of course, yogis and other spiritual teachers have known for thousands of years that our outer material existence is the play of our conscious, spiritual minds, and material science has got it all wrong thinking that form and matter came first. Hence science's difficulty in coming up with a plausible theory for the beginning of the universe. It is looking in the wrong place. Even in David Attenborough's new television series ''Life Story,'' he looks for the immortality of animal species in the way parents provide ways of survival for their young by outwitting predators. There's no consideration that all life is conscious, cooperative process originating in a higher dimension of reality, emerging from an inner universe far more immense than the outer one we live in now, vast as that is in itself. As Theresa Caputo the Long Island medium says in the title of her second book, ''There's more to Life than This !''
So, evolutionists look at survival of the fittest and the immortality of species, in the material universe, still not realising that ALL life goes on and is immortal, emerging out of the thoughts and emotions of the inner universe. In the spiritual and mental aspects behind physical life, we are already THERE, within eternity. William Blake already saw that.
Going further into this topic,, spiritual teachings tell us much more about the Divine and how each of us chooses the time and place of our conception and birth. Some parents occasionally glimpse psychically a child yet to be born, a year or more before they are even conceived, and the vision eventually comes true. Now that provides proof of the pre-existence of the spirit, beyond any physical explanation.
With regard to dying, it seems that we may be able to select from several possible options the time and place of our death and return to the spirit world. The course of our life is not cast in concrete This point of view takes the pressure off the medical profession in its desperate attempts to prolong life. By all means repair and restore a broken or diseased body with medicine, surgery and modern technology, but death is eventually inevitable, and not tragic. The mind is not extinguished, as all the evidence from psychic science proves. There is no death to consciousness. Individual direct experiences of contact with our loved ones prove to us beyond any doubt that they still exist, and so will we live on after leaving our body. Mass experiences of spiritual revelation, as at Lourdes, Fatima or Medjugorje and other religious and Near Death experiences provide further evidence of our immortality
So here are more spiritual teachings about the Divine and the nature of spiritual reality, coming through the mediumship of Adila Fachiri in London in the 1930s.
You all know and have love, but do you quite grasp love that is absolute, that is by itself ? The moment it is mingled with the slightest ill-feeling, it ceases to be that love we always talk about. Love on earth has graduations, has different qualities and stages. but that loves is not the love of God which is absolute and is the flame ever shooting and shin ing The love in you is from God, but you all have listened to the voice of evil and therefore love on earth cannot be absolute, though it can be, and is, very great with many.
You have to fit in with the circle that knows only of love and light.
You know that everything moves more or less in a circle, as a circle is the symbol of eternity. Now put yourself in the middle of space. If you are cultivating a love which gives, you will shoot out from every angle of your being vibrating waves, charged with giving love, regardless of your own desires, though of course including them, and this spreads a light which you cannot see, but which is doing invaluable benefit to mankind. This love naturally conquers every other kind (of condition) because it is not limited to one road, one subject, etc., but emanates from all sides and angles. This is the love which has the most resemblance to the love of God. It may in its route even touch criminals - and why not - as its object is to draw the good in all. (This is the most effective way to carry out spiritual and distant healing.)
Now we turn to the love which is self-absorbing, a love with sad limitations and which ultimately falls into the pit of loneliness.
In this case, again put yourself in space, but instead of shooting out the waves from every angle, you use your brain and willpower to dominate you and selfishly try to draw into your own ego all you can. You absorb and stop the vibrating circle, and remain steady in your feelings which you control to suit your own benefit. Such rigid love can never give without control, and deliberately closes the channels of free giving. It only gives to please itself, and never for a second allows any other emotion but that controlled through the brain. (So it is not spiritual at all.) So it is a dangerous love, because it can deceive and can draw you down to the pit of loneliness (and depression.)
The conclusion is that the giving love allows the freedom of the waves from every pore of your body within and without, whilst the self-absorbing love sucks through the brain everything it can for its own benefit and instead of light around, there is darkness.
(This kind of love drains the energy of all those around it).
Selflessness is true Godliness. Sacrifice is love. If you have no love, whether you are wealthy or poor, you cannot be happy. Where true love acts, evil becomes stunned and its waves scattered about, while buds of beauty create waves shooting out into the universe.
Real love is real tact.
Love must always be spontaneous and unexpected. Love is constant. Evil is fickle. Love is calm and brings light. Evil is unsteady and in its restlessness cast a mist of shadows around it and so we cannot follow their movements.
Love can be acquired by gradually telling those who care only for material possessions that God dwells in all of us.
Only through love can we arrive at truth and the understanding of God.
Love leads the spirits to God. The Mind of selfish love is affected by ambitions, always trying to surpass others. It has no time for truelove.
Only through modesty and meekness and unselfish love can mankind approach the light of God.
Those who can love on earth allow the Divine to shine in them.
If you are good, you have love in you, and if you have love in you, you have God in you and if you have God in you, you believe in Him.
The true religion of God is love.
